Question of the Week

Question for the week of Auagust 9, 2004:

Our question this week comes from Kathleen:

I recently bought a new pattern that uses the reverse applique technique, but the instructions are not too clear -- can anyone simplify this technique for me?

nancy in OK :
I'd go to the library and look at any Hawaiian Quilting books. They may have clearer instructions for the reverse applique. HA quilts cut the top design first. You might look at Mola instructions to cut as you go.

Christina in WA :
Think of it like a window in your top piece of fabric that is open and shows the underneath fabric coming through. Practice with 2 pieces of fabric, draw a simple shape, stich around it, and cut out the center. Like paper piecing it takes doing it a couple of times before it's really clear. Construction paper is good for making mock ups.
Donna :
Hi! Applique is the process of applying a piece of fabric ontop of another fabric. Reverse applique is a process whereby the background fabric has an opening in it and the edge of the opening is sewn down to reveal another fabric underneath it. In that case the applique piece is behind the background fabric instead of ontop of it. Does that help?
