Question of the Week

Question for the week of May 24, 2004:

Our question this week comes groffbt:

What is the best way to enlarge a finished quilt?

cathy :
Add a border

byrdie :
A pieced border or several coordinated pieced borders.
Lisa McBride :
Analyze what the pattern of the quilt is and continue it out only in larger, yet proportional, strips. Or just sew strips in same materials around until the width desired. Maybe altering colors every round.
etsquilting :
Add a small 1/2" border then a new block or design or appli. Or simply add additional borders and extend some appli. or additional blocks, that, is similar to finished quilt design, into those borders.
Chris Reeske :
Take off binding and add one or more borders. I decide the finished size I want then add backing only on all 4 sides to that measurement. I then lay it flat and add batting all around. Next I add the new border right side down, matching raw edge with original quilt and sew through all layers with a walking foot. I flip the new border over onto the new backing, and keep sewing and flipping until I have the size I want. I like this way because it helps stablize the quilt sandwich. You then add binding and quilt as you wish.
