Question of the Week

Question for the week of March 15, 2004:

Our question this week comes Lana K:

Can you please tell me how the quilters from long ago attached frames to the ceiling. I need to know how they raised and lowered them.

C.E. A. :
There were pulleys attached to the ceiling at the point above the 4 corners of the frame. On the 4 corners of the framer were eye hooks that ropes could be attached to and then threaded through the pulleys in the ceiling. Sometimes a tie-off clamp was attached to the side of the frame or in the ceiling or on the wall so that the frame would be locked in position and out of the way until it was needed for quilting again.

Pulleys
Louise :
My great-grandmother had one. I think they used pullies. I think it's a great idea if you have limited space.

My in-laws made me quilting frames to hang on ceiling. These frames were made of 4 long boards that are secured together at each corner with a small vice. Cord was wrapped around each corner. Ends of the cord were attatched to hooks screwed into ceiling. When I "put up" my frame" at night I simply wound the cord around the frame corner alternateing each end until it was lifted up to the ceiling. This type of frame is great for small floor spaces. I will always remember my little toddler cousin saying to me, "Oh, you have a bed on your ceiling". I had just begun my quilt and with it tucked away on the ceiling it looks like a bed. I hope I have helped.
