Question of the Week

Question for the week of March 8, 2004:

Our question this week comes Sandra K:

What do they mean by "American piecing" method ?

caroline :
Do you mean applique? or patch work.
Or hand piecing or by machine? Are their any British quilters who could enlighten us of their methods for comparison's sake? What do the history books say? Is American piecing derived from quilts done by indigenous peoples?

More questions to answer one!!

Katie :
The only thing I could think of is a friend once told me that in Britain (I think, somewhere in Europe, just don't remember exactly) they press the seams on their quilts open. She also said that because we press ours over they stay together better. I don't know if that's what you meant.
Kathy in WA :
It's been most of the week and no one has responded. It could be because we don't know. Where did you hear or see the term? The only thing I can think of is the possibility of it being "as opposed to English piecing" which is a way of hand piecing around paper templates that is commonly used for designs like Grandmother's Flower Garden.
