Question of the Week

Question for the week of January 19, 2004:

Our question this week comes Amy D:

Is there a computer designing program out there that will aid you not only in designing a quilt but also advise how much fabric to buy and guide you in cutting the fabric with a rotary cutting system?

Mindy :
The new Quilt Pro has all these features and is easy to use.

Louise :
I started with EQ4 and updated a couple of years ago to EQ5. The rotary cutting instructions are excellent, but like someone else said, the fabric requirements are REALLY generous. I can't imagine starting a quilt without having it in EQ5 so I can rearrange it, change the colors, resize the blocks, etc. It's a great buy and the instrutions/tutorial that comes with it make it very user-friendly.
Kathy in WA :
You will find all those capabilities in the latest versions of Electric Quilt (EQ5) QuiltPro version 4 has a rotary cutting tool, but as I have not updated to that version I am not sure what it does.
One thing to be aware of is that most quilt softwares will calculate needed yardage very generously because they count the square that a triangle or other shape is made from. I've found this true for both of these products. They also figure the borders as cut from the lengthwise grain of the fabric without seams, so you might sometimes wonder why such a long piece is needed for a seemingly small part of the quilt as a narow border.
