Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 20, 2003:

Our question this week comes Katie:

would like to know if anyone knows how to make a quilted dress - I was watching a movie set in the Civil War era and the women were wearing dresses that looked like they were quilts. Any ideas, hints, patterns, etc.?

Lera Cavanaugh :
I have seen photos of petticoats that were quilting--rather elaborately. I don't know about the dresses.

Janice :
i made a quilted dress once, for a program at our town's celebration. I bought a jumper style pattern, the kind with a fitted top and full skirt bottom. I first made a piece of quilted fabric, like i was making a quilt top. I then used the pattern to cut the top pieces out. For the bottom i made a large patchwork piece of fabric from four inch squares and again using the pattern i cut the bottom pieces from the patchwork.I then continued with the pattern following thier directions. I bought a blouse with puffy sleeves and wore it under the jumper. It was really a nice dress, but for an event. I hope this gives you some ideas to maybe make your own design.
