Question of the Week

Question for the week of August 4, 2003:

Our question this week comes Bonnie J:

I have notice several quilts made recently with crayons used to replace the fabric for applique - how to you do this and do you have to use special crayons?

Kathy in WA :
I have done many quilts with children using regular crayons. Yes--Crayola--or one of the other higher quality brands--are best. The really cheap ones seem to be all wax.

My addition to the suggestions is this. Iron the fabric you are drawing or coloring on to freezer paper. It will stabilize the fabric and help to keep it from shifting. Remove the freezer paper before pressing to remove the wax and set color. For that use plain paper, paper towels, or brown bag paper as mentioned before.

Lenore Lawrence :
Regular crayons can be used. I always use Crayola brand because it seems to have more pigment.

Color your picture with crayon. Then, slip your picture into a paper grocery bag and press it. This will take out the extra wax. The pigment is left in the fabric.......I iron it A LOT to get the pigment heat set--it works wonderfully.

Happy Quilting!
