Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 28, 2002:

Our question this week comes Patti

I have a household sewing machine and I do free motion quilting. Sometimes the bobbin thread gets screwed up and the top stitches pull. What am I doing wrong?

Katie :
It sounds like the tension (top and bobbin) are in need of a tweek or two. Pull out the bobbin case and pull lightly on the thread, does it move too easily through the case? If so, you can tighten that by using your thumb nail to tighten down that tiny tiny screw to give it a bit more tension if your bottom thread is "looping". As for top tension, each machine is different and you may want to consult the manual for adjusting the top tension. I would guess that since you are quilting through multiple layers you will have to loosen the top tension a tad, each time until it comes out right.

Sue :
I'd guess the bobbin thread is something wrong with your machine. I find when doing free motion quilting I push the fabric through faster than I am running the needle. The result is that the top thread is laying on top of the fabric with bobbin "loops" coming up to the top, if that makes sense. Either slow your hands down or speed up the machine!
Debbie in Wi :
Double check how you have threaded your machine, also clean & vacumn out your machine. check all the settings.
Patti :
Double check your bobbin and the way you are bringing your thread through. Sometimes I forget that my bobbin requires one to have the thread to the right side before putting into the bobbin casing.
