Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 21, 2002:

Our question this week comes Cathy

I am somewhat of a new quilter with a love for fabric. For the past year I have been receiving eight 1930's style fabric fat quarters a month so I now have quite a collection - I would now like to put a quilt together. Any quilt blocks you can recommend for the beginner quilter?

Jane :
Try SunBonnet Sue & Overall Sam. I made several baby quilts this summer using up some of my 30's stash. It reminded me of dressing paper dolls when I was oh-so-much younger. So much fun.

JoAnn :
I think that this would be a terrific opportunity to try many block, ie a sampler quilt. Find a book with block patterns, all the same size and go for it. You may also find the block patterns you love, to make up that fabric.
bettyidaz :
Atkinson Designs has a pattern for the yellow brick road that is super easy and looks great in all different colors. Good luck and have fun.
Patricia :
Welcome to Quilting!! There are several books out there just for fat quarters. "Fat Quarter Quilts" and "More Fat Quarter Quilts" are two of them. The patterns in the Fons and Porter Magazine are set up for fat quarters. Patterns with triangles are definately more difficult but not that much more if you're careful. Good blocks to try are log cabin, and rail fence. Good Luck!
Sue Salinger :
Try the Lucky Stars quilt by Atkinson Design. I have seen it done up in a variety of fabrics, and they are always beautiful, and much easier than they look. The pattern is written for fat quarters. All you need to add is a background fabric and even that can be scrappy.
Barbara :
No specific pattern, but those with squares or rectangles are easier to line up than those with lots of triangles. I think there's a block call "courhouse steps" done in alternating dark and light that uses only squares and strips.
