Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 15, 2002:

Our question this week comes Paula O

I don't have a sewing machine, but I've seen that a quilt can be done by hand piecing - Do you have any suggestions on books or a place I can get information on how to get started.

Connie Conway :
I taught myself to quilt about a year ago by checking out and reading every quilt book at the library. Then I practiced what I had learned by making a baby quilt. I made the entire quilt by hand (not one sewing machine stich in the quilt). In hindsight the only thing I would do differently is buy quality fabric from a quilt store. I spent hundreds of hours on a quilt that turned out great and is cherished by my family, but the quality of the fabric is so poor I'm sure it won't last for years and years.

My suggestion would be to go to public library and check out a quilt book. Most quilting books have instructions for both hand piecing and machine. That would be the least expensive way the next least would be to invest in a quilt magazine there are many on the market, browse thru one in the store. Usually a neat quilt on the cover most of the time the instructions are accurate. Choose a simple pattern to start and go for it. Have fun.
