Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 15, 2001:

Our question this week comes from Donna Leaton

Could someone tell me the formula for quilts? (if there is one)

Gabby Fields :
There is no real formula for quilts. You either use a pre-existing pattern or create one of your own. I've taken to keeping a notebook with patterns I've created that I plan to do eventually. The quilts I've made so far have been baby quilts that I've given away, so I mainly tried to figure out something the baby or mom might like, use something related to my relationship with the parents.

sara :
Using both sides of the brain simultaneously: the mathmatical and the creative.
odetschi :
Creativity and a lot of patience
Lou Vrabec :
Batting, Thread, lots of fabrics your pickings, new or scraps. Be creative! If you don't have fun go buy one. You'll still enjoy it.
Holice Turnbow :
I don't understand what you mean by "formula for quilts"
alice :
fabric, batting, thread, patience and lots of love
Gerri :
In the most basic sense I would say the formula for quilts is three layers: the bottom, the batting, and the top, held together by some form of stitching, be it hand quilting, machine quilting, individual yarn, floss, or crochet thread "ties," or even buttons sewn on. Beyond that, size, pattern, and all the other variables are endless!
Caroline :
Formula for which? Amount of yardage? Size of Quilt? For making bias binding? For colour schemes? For marking for quilting? I would suggest you follow a pattern for a few quilts, then you will be able to make your own.
Good luck.
