Question of the Week

Question for the week of February 5, 2001:

Our question this week comes from Karen Carter

I have an assortment of doilies and would like to know how I can use them in my quilting projects?

Patty@Patturco@aol.com :
Lace doilies can be used to make pillows to throw on a bed or sofa. They are also used to decorate quilt tops.

aggie :
hgtv-the home and garden quilt show -had a quilt done with hearts & doillies around Feb 14.go to hgtv.com you may be able to get pattern good luck
be be :
u can put them around the edges or incoperate them into your quilt
Debbie :
Debbie Mumm has a cute pattern in one of her books for putting doilies into quilting by using them for "shelf doilies". You just applique them to a 13"x13" (napkin-sized) quilt. It looks pretty cute. The book is called "Debbie Mumm's Quick Country Quilts For Every Room", and the instructions start on p.50. :-)
Lynette :
I used my mother-in-law's doilies as centres of solid colour pillows. They were lovely on navy blue. They are also wonderful as vest or jacket accents.
Janice :
I saw a program on Simnply Quilts on 2/14/01. 8 inch Doileys with 8 scallops were glued to a 10 inch block -- then cut in 4pieces to make a heart.
Joyce Robertson, Rogers, AR :
I use doilies in my Aunt Amy's Bulls Eye quilt.
Lynette :
Use them to embellish a crazy quilt, or to enhance a vest, or over a solid for a pillow cover. One would look good over a solid as an evening bag. Also they are great as collars on applique or 3D dolls or angels.
Betty :
My suggestion is to use them at the top
of a basket (around the rim) on a quilt
or at the base of a tea cup on a quilt.
Beverly Wells :
Depending on how lacy looking your doilies are, they can be use as overlays in a crazy quilt fashion. They also can be used by cutting them in quarters and making fan blocks.
jean taft :
I made a basket quilt and used crochetted pieces from our grandmothers to edge the base of the basket to look like the baskets were sitting on doilies. How big are they? Do they suggest snowflakes or angel wings to you?
Nancy Fischer :
Saw a SIMPLY QUILTS program where they cut the dolies into quarters and used them in the corner of a plain block to create heart shaped blocks and the Drunkard's Path patterns. They were very effective. You might find the episode using HGTV.COM. Happy Valentines Day.
Marsha :
If you go to www.sharonrexroad.com, she has a book on Doily Magic.(easy and beautiful) Also go to HGTV and one of Simply Quilts episodes for Feb. is with Sharon Rexroad and I think they even have one of her patterns you can print out! Hope this helps.
Lynette :
I inherited my mother-in law's linens, including many lovely doilies. I made 2 square pillows in navy chintz, with a doily sewn in the middle of each. I cut large, so there is a 1.5 inch flange all around the pillow. I used oversize gingham to cover bed pillows the same way, and they all look great on a hide-a-bed sofa at the cottage.
Nichole :
HGTV, Simply Quilts had a great guest that did a valentines progect called "In love with Lace" this guest has a book and uses doilies in many ways.
Annette :
They did a Simply Quilts show using doilies to make a very pretty heart block. It requires a doily that has eight segments, so that when you cut them in 1/4's you have a heart. They used a glue stick to glue the edges down to a square. After you glue the whole thing down to a square, then you cut the square into 1/4's. Finish the cut edge by sewing a strip of fabric to each edge. If you don't have doilies with 8 sections, you can still do the same thing, and get a fan instead. Check HGTV.com, they should have the full directions.
Pat :
Doilies would look really cute as the dress for Sunbonnet Sue.
Julie :
I can see the doilies appliqued on different sized blue blocks and sashed making them look like snowflakes- perfect for this time of year
Caroline :
I think a doily appliqued to a block on point would be nice if it were partially covered with a grandmothers fan pattern, and the rays of the fan were slightly apart so that some of the doilies could be seen.
Sandra :
I seen a quilt that had a half doilie sewn into every other block. It was very nice. Victorian looking
