Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 17, 2000:

Our question this week comes from Lori in Santa Cruz

What is the best pattern to use for Double Wedding Ring - have heard of John Flynn and Sharlene Jorgenson, but would like some advice from quilters who have actually made one.

Kristin Pratico :
I just did my first double wedding ring using John Flynn's method. It was wonderful! All of the guess work was eliminated. I've always loved the pattern, but was intimidated by it's difficulty. I think I actually said "this is so easy" when I learned Flynn's technique. Good luck to you!

Joanne :
I made John Flynn's wedding ring and it was fun and easy. I would recommend it
Julie S. :
I am to the point of quilting a queen sized wedding ring made with the templates/instructions by Sharlene Jorgenson. Before making the large size, I made a 4-circle practice piece. Each step in the project had a true learning "curve," but the book really explained each step precisely. Don't ignore any of her hints; they really helped me. My little quilt prepared me very well for the larger one I'm making for pay.

Don't skimp on the fabric quality. All those bias edges really take a beating no matter how careful you are.

Peggy :
I just finished making a queen size double wedding
ring quilt using the templete method.
I used a single fabric per ring at the
request of my daughter, who is getting
the quilt.

The method uses a blind hem stitch to
applique the rings onto whole squares.
The quilt would have gone together faster if I
had checked the placement of every piece
rather than thinking that it was "close
enough". Be sure that you read the
directions carefully and check every single
block to make sure that placement is
consistent. It will save you headaches
and un-sewing later on.

caroline :
A garden for my wedding ring--Judy Niemeyer Quilting: This is paper pieced with excellent instructions and patterns. Bought it , but haven't tried it yet. Too many UFO's
Marcelle Weigandt marciw1@prodigy.net :
I have taken John Flynns class on DWR and I think his method is FANTASTIC!
Norma Pacl :
I have used Sharlene Jorgenson's pattern and found it easy to follow. She takes you step-by-step through the whole process, from selecting fabrics, and how much to buy, to binding and quilting it. The rigid plastic templates are great, can't even imagine doing one without them.
