Question of the Week

Question for the week of May 24, 1999:

Our question this week comes from Lois Rogers

What are the different methods of hanging quilts at a quilt show?

bard5 :
Our guild uses large binder rings and large bulldog clips purchased at the local school supply store. The inside edges of the clips have been painted with the rubber coating designed for tool handles. The rings fit through the holes in the tops of the clip, and the rings fit on the poles of the display system. We hang two quilts back-to-back from each pole, but each quilt hangs from its own set of 6-8 clips. This eliminates the need for a sleeve. Sometimes large quilts need clips on the sides also.

Pat :
I use a heavy duty cutain rod and cafe rings
to hang my quilts at home. But I don't
let them hang very long and use plenty of
rings to support the weight of the quilts.
Cheryl LaBatte :
We are having our quilt show next month. It is the Minnesota Quilt Show. We have done it several ways. Except for the last two years we have asked that all quilts be brought in with a 12 inch flap sewn to the top of it. We would take and pin two of them together and throw them over a poll suspended by two other polls, like a cloths line. The last two years we have asked for a 6inch sleeve to be sewn on the back of the top. This is then slipped on to the poll to hang the quilt. This is a much faster and safer way to hang the quilts. I believe at last years show we hung in excess of 400 quilts.
dHisel :
For our county fair we use two ladders and place long wooden rods between the ladders. Usually we can put two rods for more quilts.
Bonnie Miles :
Often we have quilts come in without sleeves, which may have to be draped over the poles. I see quilts simply hung on lines as I travel throughout Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Clothes pins still do a fair job !
QUILTING MOCHA MAMA :
I prefer to use a 4" hanging sleeve. Quilts will hang better.
