Question of the Week

Question for the week of December 14, 1998:

Our question this week comes from Gabe

What do I use to mark a top that is both light and dark values?

carolea@nebi.com :
I did baptist fans overall pattern on a variable star that was darks and lights . I marked the light areas with the quilters ultimate mechanical pencil and on the dark areas I used the Nonce white chalk pencil. The Nonce is very inexpensive and have never had trouble with it not washing out and it stays on.Good luck, Carole in NE

Betty in NH :
For straight lines, I like to use a hera and a ruler. The hera is a small plastic tool, originally from Japan, that makes a crease in the fabric. If you need to re-mark something you can easily remove a line you've already made by spritzing with a little water.
RQUILT :
Try the two colored quilting pencils by ARDCO. They were reviewed by Dixie Haywood in Quilters Newsletter Magazine about three years ago, and found to be the best of all. The two colors are blue and white. They've been around forever.
Nancy :
use a silver pencil, showa up on light and dark
Janet :
I use a Berol gold pencil.
Patsy Brown, Florence, SC :
That can sometimes be a tough one, I now use a dark yellow chalk , in stick form. I use a sharpen the end, into a point, works for me.
Carol :
Sorry that should be Clover chalk pencils
Carol :
I have been using [and find they work very well
Lover chalk pencils which come in yellow,
pink and white usually one colour or another will work
for different values.

Leslie :
I have silver pencils (can't remember who makes them, but they're readily
available in quilt stores) that show up well on almost all fabrics.
