Quilts and Clothing by

Barbara Oliver Hartman

In 1989, after almost a decade as a quiltmaker, I ventured into the pattern business. Although I have lived in Texas for over 20 years, my roots are in the desert of Arizona. It was interesting to see through my fir6t years in quiltmaking that 60 many things that I disliked or was disinterested in as a child became a central influence in my early work. My mother was a dressmaker and owned a small company that made "Squaw Dresses" which is the forerunner of the "broomstick skirt". She tried with all her might to interest me in sewing, fabrics, etc,. to no avail. I hated all of it. Also, I do not remember thinking about the beauty of the desert southwest, the colors of nature or about the Native American culture and the beauty of their art. When I came to quiltmaking, those were some of the first images that called to me. For all of Mom's efforts that she had deemed a failure many years ago, the light did shine through. It is amazing to me how much stored knowledge I had about fabric and sewing in general. It must have been meant to be that I would come to this place and rediscover the steps I took in childhood. The patterns offered here began in that place.
