June 1997 - 6" Block

 Sawtooth Star

Fabric

The Sawtooth Star Block requires two different focus fabrics and one background fabric.

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:
 one 3-1/2" square of focus fabric one
 eight 2" squares of focus fabric two
 four 2" squares of background fabric
 four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the back of each of the 2" squares of focus fabric two.
 2) Please a 2" square of focus fabric 2 on top of a 2" x 3-1/2" background rectangle with the right sides together and the marked diagonal line as shown. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the three remaining background rectangles.

3) Cut 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam toward the focus fabric.
 4) Take one the units pieced in Step 3 and place one of the 2" squares of focus fabric two on top, right sides together, with the diagonally marked line as shown. Sew on marked line. Repeat with the three remaining units and squares.

5) Cut 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam toward the focus fabric. This completed unit should measure 2" x 3-1/2"
 6) Piece two of the 2" background squares with one of the units completed in Step 5 as shown. Press the seams toward the background squares. Make a second row exactly like the first row for the top and bottom Block rows.
 7) Piece the 3-1/2" square of focus fabric one with the two remaining units from Step 5 as shown. Press the seams toward the focus fabric one square. This completes the center row of the Block.
 8) Complete the Sawtooth Star Block by piecing the top and bottom rows with the center row as shown. Press the seams toward the center of the Block.
