Jean Ray Laury

Jean Ray Laury is an internationally known quiltmaker and teacher, as well as the author of The Photo Transfer Handbook: Snap It, Print It, Stitch It! and Imagery on Fabric: A Complete Surface Design Handbook for C&T Publishing. Jean has also appeared on Home and Garden Television's "Simply Quilts."

Surface design has been a focus of Jean's work and teaching for many years. Jean is well-known for her originality, as well as for her ability to clarify and simplify every technique she teaches. Her clarity of presentation, enthusiasm for her processes, and humor make her classes favorites at seminars and conferences all over the country. Her quilts are non-conventional, very individual, and often humorous or political.

Jean was honored at International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas in 1997 as recipient of the Silver Star Award for lifetime achievement. The Silver Star is awarded to a person "whose work has had a lasting impact on the development of quilting in the 20th century and on the extension of quilting and its further development into the 21st century. Winners are chosen carefully on the work they've accomplished in their lives and the impact they will have on future generations."

Jean was named to the Quilters Hall of Fame in 1982. She has received a California State Arts Commission grant, the Fresno Women Making History award, and an Outstanding Community Service award. She was honored by the San Francisco Women's Foundation for her contributions to the arts. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of American Crafts in New York, the American Crayon Company, the DeYoung Museum (San Francisco), the Fresno Art Museum, California State University, and as part of many group shows. One of her quilts resides in the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, "Full Deck Art Quilts."

Jean discovered quilting while attending graduate school at Stanford University, and made her first quilt as part of a masters degree project. She then started teaching adult women in seminars and guilds (her favorite work). Other books by Jean Ray Laury include 14,287 Pieces of Fabric; No Dragons On My Quilt; Incredible Quilts for Kids; Ho for California: Pioneer Women and Their Quilts; and The Creative Woman's Getting It All Together At Home Handbook.

Jean's books, articles, exhibitions, and lectures reflect her enjoyment of teaching, screen printing, and quiltmaking. Her workshops have taken her to many countries on five continents. She and Frank Laury live near Clovis, California in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains.
