Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 20, 2005:

Our question this week comes from Shirley L:

Is there a product that will wash out the brownish age areas on antique quilts?

jean haldeman :
a mixture of buttermulk & lemon juice

Ann M. :
The sun can bleach it out. Lay flat in sun for several days. Cover colored fabrics if you can.
Diana :
Oxy Clean will help but most times those spots are from dried blood or poor storing of quilts and may never come out. When storing quilts they should be wrapped in a large piece of white cloth or a pillow case. Never directly on a wooden shelve of truck, the wood will oxidize and cause the fabrics to discolor and deteriate over time.
