Question of the Week

Question for the week of January 20, 2003:

Our question this week comes Kay:

Has anyone found a way to print directly on fabric with an Ink Jet Printer and have it color fast without using the "Bubble Jet 2000" and the rinse?

cheryl :
cut a piece of freezer paper to the size required and iron your fabric on then place through printer as per normal iron to set works great

Betty C :
I also have used freezer paper and cut it to 81/2 x 11". As far as being water proof, I'm not sure. Haven't tested that part!
Dot :
Black ink is permanent, so I print my labels in black and then heat set and they work great. Of course if you want to use color, you do have to treat the fabric before or after, not sure which. I iron my fabric to freezer paper and cut it exactly 8 1/2" by 11" before running through the printer and it works good every time.
joy :
yuo can use card stock paper and use adistiv to make it sike to the paper and tape the end that gos thour first and print
Betty H :
You can use some contact paper (the plastic type) and stick it onto the back of your fabric and it will give it more body so that it will go thru the printer. (Make sure the contact paper is on the side that won't be printed!")
This will NOT work with Lazer printers. I use a bubble jet printer and it is really hard to get the ink off once it is heat set with an iron. Once printed then remove the fabric from the contact paper!
CYNDI :
On fons and porter they suggested using fabric that has been washed then soaked in a solution of ultra downy can't remember exact details but you might be able to find out at their web site, or by emailing them.
