Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 29, 2002:

Our question this week comes Peshe

I'm going to hand piece a Lone Star quilt using the English paper piecing method. Current instructions are for strip piecing and follow the grain on two sides of the diamond and two on the bias. Older instructions say cut the length of grain from point to point, thus all sides are on the bias. What are your thoughts/feedback/preferences??

Charlotte :
I used Eleanor Burns' method to strip piece this pattern. Two sides were on the straight of grain. It worked extremely well, having as little bias as possible. Just remember, when handling bias-cut edges, handle and press them as little as possible and with lots of care.

Caroline :
July/Aug. 2002, issue of Quilters' Newsletter Magazine: Page 48, etc. has excellent instructions re perfecting Lone Stars. Good Luck!
bj :
I have always done this by strip piecing and two side were on the straight of grain. You sew a straight of grain side to a bias side and it works very well with a minimum of stretching. Good Luck, bj
