Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 3, 2002:

Our question this week comes Lindy

What's the latest software for designing foundation piecing squares? Can it be done without a computer?

Christa :
What a magnificent lot of costumes.
U should be reaaly happy that they look so good and especially that they all fit.
Splendid

Canadian quilter :
For Sirfinmom--You need to square up all your blocks and make sure they're all the same size before you start to sew the quilt together, otherwise, you'll end up with a mess. You can do this with your rotary cutter and a template, or you can use the marks on your cutting mat. As you add pieces to your log cabin block, use the new piece you're adding as a guide for the 1/4" seam--because you know that it's undistorted and straight. Good luck with your log cabins! It's a pattern with so many possibilities--check out Mary Ellen Hopkins' books to see how many things you can do with log cabins.
Sirfinmom@aol.com :
This is my first machine quilt, and my 12 1/2 log cabin squares are not all the same size. How do I compensate for the different pieces when I sew each together. When sewing do I keep my 1/4 inch to the main center square or always stay a 1/4 inch with the new strip piece that I am adding? thank you, Tina
Kathy in WA :
Electric Quilt is now in version 5 (EQ5) and QuiltPro is in version 4. Both of these programs will help you to design paper pieced blocks or to convert blocks to paper piecing and print out the foundations. They don't really do anything that you can't do with a pencil and paper--they just make it easier and take some of the math out. when working with pencil and paper, I like a VERY sharp pencil and graph paper. Look for some basic information about designing paper piece patterns at this site: http://www.geocities.com/pcpiecers/
