Question of the Week

Question for the week of November 22, 1999:

Our question this week comes from Julie Kovach

What are good "how to" videos for a beginning quilter?

Carol Swede :

Debbie Mumm or Quilt in a Day Elenor Burns

hanneke :
Ik zou in nederland geen quiltvideo weten.
Lynette :
On PBS we in Manitoba get "Quilting from the Heartland" and "Sewing with Nancy" on Saturday afternoon back to back. Nancy often has a quilting project, and Heartland always does. In both cases the instructions are quite detailed, and you could almost work along if you tape them and replay when you have all your 'stuff' assembled.
Louise :
I rented a terrific video from our public library called "The Video Guide to Quilting." It was made by the New England Quilting Guild. It covers everything: color selection, hand and machine piecing and quilting, different kinds of frames, binding, etc. I recommend it.
Geri :
Simply Quilts on HGTV is good. Sometimes though they are showing how to do more advanced techniques. I have found that Eleanor Burns "Quilt In A
Day" books and tapes are an easy way to learn the very basics. She has at least two Sampler Quilt books out. I found these books very helpful when I started my "habit".
Donna :
The Quilt in a Day books and accompanying videos are great. I have found them to be excellent for my beginning students. There are books for the beginner as well as the advanced student.
Marsha :
Do you get HGTV (Home and Garden TV) on cable? I like to watch Alex Anderson on Simply Quilts--it is quite helpful. The show is on twice a day (9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.) in our area.

Elena :
You might want to contact HGTV. They have a show called "Simply Quilts". It is very well done. Although I do not know for sure (I have only had cable for a month), they probably have had some sort of beginner's show. Maybe you could get a copy of one of the shows.
Karen :
The first video I got was That Perfect Stitch by Dierdra McElroy. It doesn't show how to make a specific quilt, but does give a lot of indepth information on : fabric, battings, needles, thread, thimbles, frames and hoops, fabric markers, quilting designs and quilt care. Best of all, it shows how to hand quilt in close up photography from both the top and bottom of the quilt. I learned to hand quilt from this video and from the start had small even stitches. I found it in Connecting Threads catalog.
