Question of the Week

Question for the week of October 11, 1999:

Our question this week comes from Paul Filion

I am new to quilting and am thinking of getting a subscription to a quilting magazine - what would you recommend?

lynda :
I have found the American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine to be the one l enjoy and use the most, next in line would be the Quilters Newsletter Magazine. Of course once you are hooked you will probably buy every one that hits the stands as soon as they come out like the rest of us quilt fanatics..Enjoy

Faye :
I have subscriptions to both BH&G American Patchwork and Quilting AND McCall's Quilting. There isn't an issue that I don't have something dog-eared to make at a later date. I am in the process of making two right now out of one of these magazines and the instructions are great!
Gail Tucker :
Traditional Quiltworks I buy this off the newsrack without even checking it out. Always has something of interest
Caroline :
I read Quilters Newsletter at my local library.

Most of the time I take books out of the library
to see quilt ideas. When I actually spend money
buying books, I've purchased one of 500 different
patchwork patterns. I figure there must be one or
two at least that I can handle.

Otherwise I buy a book that goes deeply into just
one pattern or method. These are ususally smaller
books, paperbacks and not too expensive.

That way I have more money for fabric. (and batting
and fabric and thread, and fabric).

Taria :
My all time favorite is Quilter's Newsletter
Magazine. It has quilt world news info,
patterns, instructions, show and tell,
even good ads. I really enjoy BH&G American
Patchwork and Quilting also. Not as much info, but
really nice patterns. I would probably buy off a newstand
for a while, picking over the issues to get a feel for
each one.
for what works for you.
Kathy :
I like either American Patchwork or McCall's quilting but that is all up to your individual tastes. My suggestion would be to peruse the newstands and check out the magazines and decide which ones match your interests - be it applique, miniatures, art quilts or basic patchwork.
Carole :
Whatever you choose today will not stay your favorite. As you progress in quilting you will begin to appreciate those you didn't quite like before.
Leslie Norman :
American Patchwork & Quilting-- no question!! It contains some breath-taking patterns, good instructions, color choice variations... I want to make almost every quilt in every issue! Next choice would be McCall's quilting. They both offer good advice for beginners.
Jean Amundson :
I like all of Chitra Publications....Quilting Today, Traditional Quiltworks, and Miniature Quilts.
I also like Quick Quilts....it's a good magazine for making some really cute quick quilts. I'm kinda new
to quilting so like patterns that are easy and quick so I can see the finished results fast!!!
caroline rogers :
I live in Canada, and its expensive to buy Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, but I think it's the best. Foundation Piecer magazine is next best. If you join or belong to a quilt guild or club, you should be able to view their library magazines, or coax them into taking out a subscription. I'm not sure why people find QNM over their heads. Perhaps these people need to take a basic block drafting course, which of course, has been featured in QMN.
Lynette :
I particularly like American Patchwork and Quilting. The alternate colourways shown by Laura Boenkhe (sp?) help me to think more clearly about the pattern. And the annual Sampler is simply marvelous.
Pat :
I highly recommend Quiltmaker. It not only has quilts for all levels, it has actual quilting patterns and ideas.
fonda :
iwould suggest going to the public library and see what they have in quilting magazines. then, see what you like best. either order it or keep going back to the library for the latest copy. also, you could go to your favorite bookstore and look at their selection on quilting magazines. take as much time as you like. when you take the time at home to really go through it, you can decide what you like or don't like about the magazine. you can either get a subscription or try a new magazine. have fun and take your time, even though you probably want to jump in.
SammyG :
Quilter's Newsletter is probably the industry "gold standard". Butif you're new to quilting it'll probably overwhelm you! Better save that for later. Quiltmaker has patterns that are well explained and graded as to difficulty. Quilt is also a good beginning magazine. It is published quarterly. Drool over some of the advanced quiltmaking if you must, but do yourself a big favor and start simply. Remember the KISS principle!
Anne Marie :
Quilters Newsletter by far! It has basic as well as advanced patterns and is quite inspirational. It's been mentioned that it can be "over your head" but that's what challenges you to move forward. They advertise lots of wonderful exhibits as well. For me, they're more professional than some of the magazines out there.
Lynette :
For simple, basic projects - Quick and Easy Quilting. For things that you'll just love - BHG American Patchwork and Quilting.
april :
Quiltmaker has very "Makeable" patterns with several color
options. which makes it a good magazine.

Quilters newsletter is very inspirational now, but I was not
very impressed with it when i was first starting out, because
It was mostly over my head :)

I did spend a lot of time at the newstands for a while looking
at the mags and sending in the free issue cards. (is that cheating?)

Cecily Olsen :
I have just about all the quilt magazine that are out. I like QUILT (4 a year) and Better Homes and Garden American Patchwork & Quilting.(6 a year)
Claire Breen :
Australian patchwork and quilting a great
publication with lots of quilts
Judith Lock :
American Patchwork and Quilting is my absolute favorite!!
Jane Morgan :
Quilter's Newsletter is definitely the best. You might also want to join the American Quilter's Society and receive their beautiful publication .
Mavis :
I love paper piecing and recently found the Foundation Piecer magazine. It is filled with patterns and instructions for all levels.
Lori Peters :
I really like Traditional Quiltworks, and Quilters Newsletter. I like them because personally I like to read and hear about what other quilters are doing, as opposed to a mag full of patterns. Tradition Quiltworks has both and is less expensive than most.
My only subscription is to Miniature Quilts, because that's my personal passion.
