Question of the Week

Question for the week of July 5, 1999:

Our question this week comes from A McDonald

I am presently hand quilting a Lone Star quilt and the batting keeps coming through with the stitches, is there anyway to prevent this or fix what is already there

Ruthie in Florida :
Have you checked to see if your quilting needle is dull? Make sure your quilting needle is sharp. It might be having trouble and pulling the batting thru cause it's dull. Also, I use a cotton low-loft batting and don't have that problem.

dlk in Ann Arbor, MI :
I agree that the problem is with the batting. I use the Warm & Natural cotton batting now, and no longer have the problem known as "bearding" Good luck with you quilting.
Joyce in Midland, TX :
Polyester batting will cause "bearding" and also using poly/cotton for the piecing. I would use l00% cotton batting and 100% cotton fabric in the piecing - but nothing you can do to prevent it this far along.
Kim Myers :
I don't know how to prevent it now, but I had the same problem and I got Dreamer
cotton batting and Utica silk cotton thread(it comes in a long skein that you cut at the bottom instead of on a spool). On the quilt I am presently doing, I have not found the batting to come through even once. I got both of these things from Pinetree Quilting. They have a web site on the WWquilting.
Good luck.
Kathy in SC :
When layering your quilt have the bonded or smoother side of the batting facing the quilt top.
Vicki from SW PA :
Boy... you have really stumped us! I have never
had this happen and I was trying to figure
out what would cause this. Did you use
good quality cotton for the patchwork? Or
is it a thin looser woven cotton? Are you
just using one thread of quilting thread
on a small "between" needle size 10 or so?
I was hoping when I had checked back that
someone would have answered this question cause
it had me wondering too!
