Question of the Week

Question for the week of March 1, 1999:

Our question this week comes from azeagles

I'd would like to know what patterns quilters are using to make their Y2K quilts?

Betty/VA :
I'm taking each person's 25 squares and sewing them into a grid 5x5 with the darkest in one corner to the lightest in the opposite corner. Then I plan on arranging the squares so the lightest corners make light diagonals across the quilt, like the log cabin arrangement "Straight Furrows".

Jbbrown@sanjuan.edu :
I'm making an Offset Log Cabin in paper piecing. I have 392 fabrics used and figure it will take the rest of the year to hit 2,000
Jenny A :
I might sew just all the squares together, with the colors shading from red, orange, etc. all the way to violet...a sort of "rainbow" effect. The siggies will be in the "yellow" section. Or I might use the siggies as the inner border, with an outer border of black to frame everything. Another idea is the "postage stamp" set, with blocks of 5x5 (25 in each block), with the siggy in the center, set straight with narrow muslin sashing.
jane :
My bee is exchanging white on white, cream on cream, white on cream, you get the idea, star blocks, It's to be our challenge to come up with contrast in our blocks with only those colors and then we will learn new sashings and borders to put the top together in our own ways. It should really be great!
Maureen Flaherty :
I have not started sewing my yet but what I think I am going to do is make a block out of each 25 with the signature square in the middle. I am going to try grading the colors from light to dark in each square. I then intend to use the millenium fabric as sashing and border and maybe backing. We will see how it turns out.
diane@webers.org :
i have not started yet, but i think an obvious choice would be a "thousand pyramids" quilt, with 2000 charm pyramids.
Joan Kniffen :
Russian Sunflower
Maria :
I am using a "Contrary Wife" block. If you want to take a look, I have a few pictures uploaded.

Felicia :
Our guild is making a Mariners Compass for a Y2K
Quilt.
Sue Cote :
English Paper piecing Hexagons
twicecy :
i'm doing an applique of iris' on a white on white background, a full size quilt, hand quilted crosshatch.
rsvandee@staroute.com :
I'm making a 5 X 5 sq. block with the siggy sq.
some where in the middle. 40 of the blocks will
be on the front of the quilt with sashes
40 of the blocks will be on the back of the quilt
, these blocks will be butted next to each other
with a wide border on the outside. then I plan on having
it machine quilted by someone who does that. I don't
machine quilt only hand quilt. There will be to many seams
to hand quilt.
scrappykat >^..^< :
I am doing a 9-patch and using all the extras for borders - thinking I will use tea-dye muslin between the 9-patches. I am having fun*
cindy :
I am making each into a friendship star with
the signature block in the middle. This
only uses 12 of the 25 squares, so I will use the
rest in the border. Haven't decided on the
design for that yet! :)
The blocks look cute and it's great to have started
and stopped fretting over the "right" pattern
to use!
Happy quilting!
