Question of the Week

Question for the week of June 29, 1998:

Our question this week comes from Katy Padon

There are only so many beds in a house! (I have only one.) What are some other creative ways to display your burgeoning quilt collection?

Deb Jobes :
We have a beautiful handmade quilt made
by my Uncle George & Aunt Nance hung on
the stairwell for all to see

Keren Davidoff :
You use it to cover a low coffee table (so everyone can see it) and you put a crystal or glass bowl on top.
This suggestion is NOT recommended for homes with young children.
Sandra L from R.R.Texas :
I have a special friend who displays hers by keeping the quilts rolled and filled in a old wheel barrel. It helps to peek your interest and you want to unwind and take a peek. Great way to start up conversations and interest in our hobby!
Debbie in Texas :
I also fill wall spaces with my quilts, but I hang antique quilts this way by draping them through large grapevine wreaths. During different seasons, I trim the wreaths with miniature lights, specific holiday greenery/flowers/
adding a pair of antique gloves, etc.
Mari Marine :
I have a oak-framed glass quilt chest, kind of like what snow white was laying in after she bit the apple and fell asleep. I keep it in my living room, and when friends and family come over, my quilts are very accessible. I take them out, talk about them, show them, and it gives me a chance to refold them. It also looks really pretty because of the contents and is a functional piece of furniture.
Shelli :
How about as a table cloth with a glass cover to protect from spills? I've never tired it, the idea just came to me!
Lindsey Rocheleau :
Nothing is more rewarding than sharing
a quilt with someone you love. Give one
away, snuggle on the couch with your
significant other, or donate them to
children in the hospital or to a non-
profit organization.
FLJ@juno.com :
I use mine for chair backs and even put one on my Chaise lounge outside. I put one on a drafty window in the cold weather.
Judy in Texas :
How about filling a sometimes-unused spot?? At the end of a hallway, mount a hanging quilt rack or a decorative curtain rod. Hang quilt(s) on the rack or rod!! A nice decorative touch is a shelf above with a flower arrangement of colors in the quilt(s), plus other related display items. Hope you can use this. Thanks for the other tips!!
Karen in Tucson :
Ditto to all the above. In addition, I have taken them in
and decorated the walls and furniture of my office with them --
I have decorated walls in my church with them...I have them
folded and placed in a glass fronted cabinet. They look
really great that way.

Kristin Surprise :
Over the arm of a rocking chair, in baskets, at the foot of a bed over an old trunk or storage chest. My mother in law displays the quilt I made for her at the end of her bed when company comes. She doesn't want to ruin it with regular use. It really brightens up the room and is a nice display for guests.
Louise Murphy :
I display in all of the previously mentioned ways and just in the last year or two discovered this...I roll them in fairly uniform sizes tie with raffia or twine and stand anywhere from three or more in baskets....really like this method as I can get some color into a particular spot in a room...also don't forget over the doors of armoires and country cupboards....
Janet :
Hang them on the walls, drape them over the backs of chairs and couches, fold them on shelves or in armoires, and I use small ones for table centerpieces or runners.
