Question of the Week

Question for the week of February 9, 1998:

Our question this week comes from Michele Wise

I am new to machine quilting and have only used my darning foot, I keep looking at the Big Foot and want to know if it is worth purchasing?

Sally Johnson :
I have a Big Foot (it was a gift) and Idon't use it. I like the pressue foot that came with my Phaff much better. Good luck with your machine quilting.

Nancy Ives :
What is a "Big Foot?"
qwlter1@aol.com :
I have taught machine quilting for many years, and never feel that the big foot is an essential tool to reccommend to my students. I just use the darning foot on my own machine and realy feel that is adaquate for machine quilting. I did not feel that purchasing the Big Foot was worth the expense, and did not feel that it enhanced the visibility or manuverabilty. Just use what you have, and practice!
jbr :
I have successfully machine quilted (on my Bernina) using only the darning foot. I purchased a walking foot rather than the big foot......it was more money, but between the two feet I'm a happy quilter. Hope this helps. (Use the money to buy MORE FABRIC!!)
deby@webtv.net :
No. I have a high shank big foot and
there is no difference to me. I'll sell it to you for $10.

Anthony :
IMHO, it's well worth the investment. I teach machine quilting and find that most students appreciate the increased visibility and the built-in quarter inch measurement. I think the spring action inside the foot allows for better contact. My machine quilting is done primarily on a Pfaff 7570, which I love. It has three very nice darning/embroidery feet. But, I still prefer working with the Big Foot for quilting. Do you absolutely need one? Probably not, for years quilters done beautiful free motion work using darning feet, spring needles, darning springs and even hoops. But, it is a good product that lives up to it's claim.
