 King's Highway

Fabric

The King's Highway Block uses five different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 eight 2" squares of fabric A
eight 2" squares of fabric B
four 3-1/2" x 5" rectangles of fabric B
 twelve 2" squares of fabric C
twelve 2" squares of fabric D
sixteen 2" squares of background fabric
 eight 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
 sixteen 2" x 5" rectangles of background fabric


 Piecing the Block

 1) Take one 2" square of fabric B, a 2" square of fabric C, and a 2" x 5" rectangle of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat with three more 2" fabric B and fabric C squares and three more 2" x 5" background fabric rectangles. Press seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The completed units should measure 2" x 8".
 2) Take one 2" square of fabric B, a 2" square of fabric D, and a 2" x 5" rectangle of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat with three more 2" fabric B and fabric D squares and three more 2" x 5" background fabric rectangles. Press seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The completed units should measure 2" x 8".
 3) Take one 2" square of fabric A, one 2" square of fabric C, and one 2" square of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat three more times using three more 2" squares of fabric A, fabric C, and background fabric. Press seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 4) Take one 2" square of fabric C and two 2" squares of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat once more with one more 2" fabric C square and two more 2" background fabric squares. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 5) Take two of the units completed in Step 3 and one of the units completed in Step 4 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the two remaining Step 3 units and the one remaining Step 4 unit. Press seam allowances toward the center, Step 4 unit. The completed nine-patch square should be 5" square.
 6) Take one of the nine-patch squares completed in Step 5 and two of the 2" x 5" rectangles of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat with two more 2"x 5" background fabric rectangles and the remaining Step 5 nine-patch square. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles.
 7) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and two of the units completed in Step 1 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 1 and Step 6 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 1 units. The completed squares should measure 8".
 8) Take one 2" square of fabric A, one 2" square of fabric D, and one 2" square of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat three more times using three more 2" squares of fabric A, fabric D, and background fabric. Press seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 9) Take one 2" square of fabric D and two 2" squares of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat once more with one more 2" fabric D square and two more 2" background fabric squares. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 10) Take two of the units completed in Step 8 and one of the units completed in Step 9 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the two remaining Step 8 units and the one remaining Step 9 unit. Press seam allowances toward the center, Step 9 unit. The completed nine-patch square should be 5" square.
 11) Take one of the nine-patch squares completed in Step 10 and two of the 2" x 5" rectangles of background fabric and piece together as shown. Repeat with two more 2"x 5" background fabric rectangles and the remaining Step 10 nine-patch square. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles.
 12) Take one of the units completed in Step 11 and two of the units completed in Step 2 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 2 and Step 11 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 2 units. The completed squares should measure 8".
 13) Take one 2" square of fabric C and one 2" square of fabric D and join together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Fabric C and Fabric D 2" squares. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric C square.
 14) Take the two units completed in Step 13 and piece together as shown. Press seam allowance in either directions. The completed square should measure 3-1/2".
 15) Take two 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and one 3-1/2" x 5" rectangles of fabric B and piece together as shown. Repeat with the six remaining 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and the three remaining 3-1/2" x 5" rectangles of fabric B. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 8".
 16) Take the unit completed in Step 14 and two of the units completed in Step 15 and piece together as shown to completed the center row of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 15 units. The completed row should measure 3-1/2 x 18-12/2".
 17) Take once of the units completed in Step 7, one of units completed in Step 12 and one of the units completed in Step 15 and piece together as shown, being sure that the Fabric A squares are positioned correctly within the unit. Repeat with the remaining Step 7, Step 12 and Step 15 units to complete the top and bottom rows of the Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 15 units. The completed rows should measure 8" x 18-1/2".
 18) Piece together the row completed in Step 16 with the two rows completed in Step 17 to completed the Kings Highway quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the top and bottom row of the Block. The completed Kings Highway quilt Block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
