January 2000 - 18" Block

 Grandmother's Quilt

Fabric

The Grandmother's Quilt Block uses two different fabrics.

 One focus fabric

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 four 5" x 9-1/2" rectangles of focus fabric.
 four 5" squares of focus fabric.
 eight 5" squares of background fabric.
 three 2" strips of focus fabric at least 14" long.
 three 2" strips of background fabric at least 14" long.


 Piecing the Block

1) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, piece together one 2" strip of focus fabric and one 2" strip of background fabric. Repeat with remaining 2" strips of focus fabric and background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the focus fabric strips.
 2) Piece together the three units from Step 1 being sure that the background fabric is placed next to the focus fabric as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the focus fabric.
 3) With a rotary cutter, straighten the edge of the strips sewn together in Step 2. Then cut six 2" pieces from the Step 2 unit as shown. These finished units should measure 2" x 9-1/2".
 4) Take two of the units completed in Step 3 and piece together as shown being sure that the focus fabric squares are facing the background fabric squares. Repeat with the remaining Step 3 units. Press the seam allowance toward the left.
 5) Take the three units completed in Step 4 and piece together as shown to complete the center unit of the quilt Block. Press all of the seam allowances to the left so that all the seam allowances are facing the same direction. The completed unit should measure 9-1/2" square.
 6) On the wrong side of the 5" background fabric squares, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 7) Place one of the background fabric square, right side together with one of the 5" x 9-1/2" rectangles of focus fabric with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 5" x 9-1/2" focus fabric rectangles and three more of the 5" background fabric squares.
 8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 9) Take one of the units completed in Step 8 and place one of the background fabric square, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 8 units and the three remaining 5" background fabric squares.
 10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. The completed "geese" units should measure 5" x 9-1/2".
 11) Take the center quilt Block unit completed in Step 5 and two of the geese units completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown with the geese units pointing toward the center unit. Press the seam allowance toward the center unit. This completes the center row of the quilt Block and should measure 9-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 12) Take one of the geese units from Step 10 and two of the 5" focus fabric squares and piece together as shown to complete the bottom row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the final Step 10 geese unit and the two remaining 5" focus fabric squares to completed the top quilt Block row. Press the seam allowances toward the focus fabric squares. The completed row should measure 5" x 18-1/2".
 13) Take the center quilt Block row completed in Step 11 and the top and bottom quilt Block rows completed in Step 12 and piece together as shown making sure that the geese are pointing toward the center of the Block. Press the seam allowances away from the center row. The completed Grandmothers' Quilt Block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
