Fabric

The Coronation Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 one 2-3/8" x 11-7/8" rectangle of background fabric
 one 2-3/8" x 11-7/8" rectangle of fabric B
 fourteen 2" squares of background fabric
 eight 2" squares of fabric B
 four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
 eight 3-1/2" squares of fabric A
 four 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of background fabric


 Piecing the Block

 1) On the wrong side of the 2-3/8" x 11-7/8" rectangle of background fabric lightly draw a straight line 2-3/8", 4-3/4", 7-1/8", and 9-1/2" and from the short edge dividing the rectangle into five equally sized squares. Then divide each square in half be drawing in a diagonal line in the squares as shown.
 2) Place the marked background fabric rectangle on top of the 2-3/8" x 11-7/8" rectangle of fabric B with the right sides of the fabric together. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the marked diagonal lines as shown.

3) Cut the sewn rectangles apart on the previously marked lines as shown creating ten 2" half-square triangle units. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B.
 4) Piece the ten 2" half-square triangles completed in Step 3 with ten 2" squares of background fabric making sure that all the half-square triangles are placed as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the 2" background square.
 5) Piece together two of the units completed in Step 4 as shown. Repeat with the remaining eight units from Step 4. Press the seam allowances in either direction. The five squares completed in this step should measure 3-1/2" square.
 6) Lightly mark a diagonal line, as shown, on the wrong side of the eight 2" squares of fabric B.
 7) Take one the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and one of the 2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the remaining 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three of the marked 2" squares of fabric B.
 8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 9) Take one the units completed in Step 8 and one of the 2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the remaining Step 8 units and marked 2" squares of fabric B.
 10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 11) Take one of the squares completed in Step 5 and two of the rectangles completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown. Press the seam allowances toward center square.
 12) Take two of the 2" background fabric squares and one of the Step 10 units and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining 2" squares and Step 10 unit. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 13) Take the unit completed in Step 11 and the two units completed in Step 12 and piece them together as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 12 units. This completed square should measure 6-1/2" square.
 14) Lightly mark a diagonal line, as shown, on the wrong side of the eight 3-1/2" squares of fabric A.
 15) Take one the 3-1/2 x 6-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and one of the 3-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the remaining 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three of the marked 3-1/2" squares of fabric A.
 16) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A.
 17) Take one the units completed in Step 16 and one of the 3-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked line. Repeat with the remaining Step 16 units and marked 2" squares of fabric B.
 18) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 19) Take the square unit completed in Step 13 and two of the rectangle units completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to completed the center row of the Coronation quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 18 units. The completed row should measure 6-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 20) Take two of the square units completed in Step 5 and one of the rectangle units completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 5 squares and Step 18 unit to completed the top and the bottom rows of quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 18 unit. The completed rows should measure 3-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 21) Piece together the rows completed in Steps 19 and 20 as shown to completed the Coronation quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the Block. The completed quilt Block should measure 12-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
