April 1999 - 6" Block

Fabric

The Chained Ninepatch Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

 two 2-1/2" squares of fabric A
 two 2-1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 1-1/2" squares of fabric A
 sixteen 1-1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of fabric B


 Piecing the Block

 1) Piece together one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric. Repeat with the remaining 2-1/2" fabric A square and 2-1/2" background fabric square. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A square.
 2) Piece together the two units from Step 1 as shown to form the center four-patch of the quilt Block. Press the seam allowance in either directions. This completed square should measure 4-1/2" square.
 3) Lightly mark a diagonal line as shown on the wrong side of eight of the 1-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 4) Take one of the 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of fabric B and place, right sides together, with one of the marked 1-1/2" squares of background fabric with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" fabric B rectangles and three more of the marked background fabric squares.
 5) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 6) Take one of the units completed in Step 5 and place, right sides together, with one of the marked 1-1/2" squares of background fabric with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 5 units and the three remaining marked background fabric squares.
  7) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square. The completed units should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".
 8) Take two of the remaining 1-1/2" squares of background fabric squares and one of the units completed in Step 7 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 7 units and background fabric squares. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares. The completed units should measure 1-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 9) Take two of the units completed in Step 8 and piece together with the four-patch units from Step 2 as shown to create the center unit of the Chained Ninepatch Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the unit. this unit should measure 4-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 10) Take one of the remaining Step 8 unit and two of the 1-1/2" square of fabric A and piece together as shown to completed the top row of the quilt Block. Repeat with the final Step 8 unit and fabric A squares to completed the bottom row of the quilt Block. Pres the seam allowances toward the fabric A squares. The completed rows should measure 1-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 11) Take the center unit completed in Step 9 and the top and bottom rows completed in Step 10 and piece together as shown to complete the Chained Ninepatch quilt Block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the Block. The completed quilt Block should measure 6-1/2" which includes a 1-4" seam allowance on all sides.
