 Linoleum

Fabric

The Linoleum Block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

one strip 1-1/2" wide and at least 10" long of fabric A
one strip 1-1/2" wide and at least 10" long of background fabric
four 2-1/2" squares of the fabric B
one 2-1/2" square of background fabric
eight 1-1/2" squares of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) Sew the 1-1/2" wide strip of fabric A to the 1-1/2" strip of background fabric using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam toward the darker fabric.
 2) With a rotary cutter, straighten one edge the sewn together strips. Then cut four 2-1/2" wide squares from the sewn strips.
 3) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 1-1/2" background fabric squares as shown.
 4) Take one of the 2-1/2" squares of Fabric B and one of the 1-1/2" squares of background fabric and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 2-1/2" squares of Fabric B and three of 1-1/2" squares of background fabric.

5) Trim fabric 1/4" from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press seam toward the background fabric.
 6) Take one of the units completed in Step 5 and one of the remaining 1-1/2" squares of background fabric and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining units from Step 5 and the three remaining 1-1/2" squares of background fabric.

7) Trim fabric 1/4" from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press seam toward the background fabric. The completed units should measure 2-1/2" square.
 8) Take two of the units completed in Step 2 and the 2-1/2" square of background fabric and piece together as shown to form the middle row of the Linoleum Block. Press the seam allowances toward fabric A. The finished row should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 9) Take two of the units completed in Step 7 and one of the units completed in Step 2 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the two remaining units from Step 7 and the one remaining unit from Step 2. This will form the top row and the bottom row of the Linoleum Block. Press the seam allowances toward the unit completed in Step 2. The finished rows should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 10) Piece together the rows created in Step 8 and Step 9 as shown to create the completed Linoleum Block. Press the seam allowances toward the middle row. The finished Block should measure 6 1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
