Fabric

The Antique Tile Block uses four different fabrics.

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

one 2-1/2" square of fabric A
 four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of fabric C
one 1-1/2" wide by at least 12" strip of background fabric
one 1-1/2" wide by at least 12" strip of fabric B
one 1-1/2" wide by at least 8" strip of fabric B
one 1-1/2" wide by at least 8" strip of fabric C

 Piecing the Block

 1) Sew the 1-1/2" wide by at least 8" long strip of fabric B to the 1-1/2" wide by at least 8" long strip of fabric C using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam toward the darker fabric.

2) With a rotary cutter, straighten one edge the sewn together strips. Then cut four 1-1/2" wide x 2-1/2" rectangles from the sewn strips.

3) Sew two of the rectangles cut in Step 2 to two of the 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles of Fabric C with the small square of Fabric B in the upper left hand corner of the Block as shown. Then sew the remaining two rectangles from Step 2 and the remaining two rectangles of Fabric C together with the small square of Fabric B in the upper right hand corner of the Block as shown. Press the seam allowances to the Fabric C rectangles. The resulting units should be 2-1/2" square.
 4) Sew the 1-1/2" wide by at least 12" long strip of fabric B to the 1-1/2" wide by at least 12" long strip of background fabric using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam toward the Fabric B strip.

5) With a rotary cutter, straighten one edge the sewn together strips. Then cut four 2-1/2" squares from the sewn strips.
 6) To create the center row of the Antique Tile quilt Block, piece together two of the squares from Step 5 with the 2-1/2" square of Fabric A. Press the seam allowances toward the Fabric A square. The finished row should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 7) Form the top and bottom rows of the quilt Block by piecing together the squares completed in Step 3 with the two remaining squares from Step 5, being sure to place the Step 3 squares as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the outer squares completed in Step 3. The finished rows should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 8) Piece together the rows created in Step 6 and Step 7 as shown to create the completed Antique Tile Block. Press the seam allowances toward the middle row. The finished Block should measure 6 1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
