Fabric

The Pinwheel Askew Block uses two different fabrics.

One focus fabric

 One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

This Block requires:

four 3-1/2" X 2" rectangles of focus fabric
four 3-1/2" X 2" rectangles of background fabric
eight 2" squares of background fabric

 Piecing the Block

 1) Light mark a diagonal line on the back of the eight 2" background fabric squares as shown.
 2) Place one of the 2" background fabric squares on top of one of the 3-1/2" X 2" focus fabric rectangles, right sides together, with the marked diagonal line as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining focus fabric rectangles.

3) Trim fabric 1/4" from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press seam toward the background fabric.
 4) Place one of the 2" background fabric squares on top of the unit completed in Step 3 with the right sides together and the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew the fabrics together on the diagonal line.

5) Trim fabric 1/4" from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press seam toward the background fabric. The completed unit should measure 3-1/2" x 2".
 6) Piece one of the 3-1/2" x 2" background fabric rectangles with one of the units completed in Step 5 as shown. Press the seam toward the left. Repeat with the remaining background fabric rectangles and Step 5 units. The resulting unit should measure 3-1/2" square.
 7) Piece together two of the units completed in Step 6 as shown making sure that the pinwheel is "spinning" correctly. Press seam allowance toward the background fabric rectangle. Repeat with the two remaining Step 6 units. The completed unit should measure 6-1/2" x 3-1/2".
 8) Piece together the two units from Step 7 as shown making sure that the Block "spins" in the proper direction. Press the seam allowance to either side. The finished quilt Block should measure 6-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
